Yes, I did get into the Bassnectar New Years Eve show in Nashville at the Bridgestone Arena, but don’t ask me how. It was RIDICULOUS. The sound and bass were cranked to levels unimaginable, and Lorin’s set contained the biggest drops in the history of dubstep. I arrived when a band called Break Science was finishing up their set with Chali 2na from Jurassic 5. ”Raised in the cultural hotbed of New York City, Break Science’s Adam Deitch and Borahm Lee fuse the city’s rich musical legacy–jazz, funk, soul– with a deep-rooted connection to its hip-hop heritage to create their own take on modern electronic music. Break Science’s new EP, Further Than Our Eyes Can See, consists of thought-provoking, highly-textured, bass-pumping songs that include verses from some of today’s most conscious artists: Brooklyn’s Talib Kweli and Jahdan Blakkamoore, Sierra Leone’s Bajah and India’s Falu.” Now you know about it, so just listen to it.
That’s “The Alliance” from their first EP, Further Than Our Eyes Can See. Their debut is fresh, with collaborations and modern beats that thoughtfully take break beat music back to it’s roots of hip-hop. It’s been over ten years since the duo met in the New York underground live hip hop scene, and this EP has been a long time coming. Adam and Borahm have combined their favorite aspects of hip hop, glitch, trip hop, drum and bass, and dubstep into a genre that pushes electronic music to new territory. That’s because they incorporate real instruments when they record and perform live. Their live performance features Borahm on keys and tracks, while Adam holds it down on the drums. Their studio work also features “live drums and analog synths, as well as vintage keyboards like fender rhodes, and clavinet to create a truly new sound that is accurately descriptive of the times we live in.” Check out another song from Further Than Our Eyes Can See, titled “Zion Station.”
Their set on New Years Eve was awesome, and I can only see this duo going up from here. What’s the best thing about the record? IT’S FREE, and you can get it by going to their website at breaksciencemusic.com. If you get the chance to see these guys play live, I would highly recommend you invest in some tickets for you and your friends. After seeing them kill it on New Years Eve, I would welcome them back to Nashville anytime. Catch ‘em this spring in a city near you (hopefully).
