Shadowclub – “You Do It Alone” [NEW MUSIC]

SHADOWCLUB

Shadowclub’s rootsy, bluesy rock is purposely fuss free and the dozen songs on their debut, ‘Guns & Money’, were recorded live with no backing track.  Like the classic rock acts that inspire them, Johannesburg based Shadowclub are about powerful songs performed with a passion that explodes from the speakers and, live, can be felt at full force by their fans.“From the start, this was a back-to-basics band,” explains singer Jacques Moolman. “It had to be a three-piece so we could keep it simple. We wanted to make short, fast, banging tracks. Basically, music that was fun to play live and easy for a crowd to connect with.”

With ‘Guns & Money’, Shadowclub have succeeded in doing just that. The album’s title track is a furiously-paced, feel-good rocker, driven by an insistent, funk-fuelled bassline, cacophonous drums and a hip-shaking groove. You’ll hear shades of The Doors and The Ramones, snarled, seductive vocals and woo-hoos that cry out to be chanted back.  Shadowclub’s desire to make stripped down songs stems partly from the bands they were listening to when they formed at the end of 2007.  “We were big White Stripes fans,” says drummer Isaac Klawansky. “We liked The Kings Of Leon who, back then, were still quite tough and bluesy and a bit underground. Wolfmother had just come out and we adored The Black Keys. Throw in the old blues that Jacques grew up with – Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Leadbelly, Blind Lemon Jefferson – and that combination became the basis of our sound.”

shadowclub

Moolman and Klawansky formed Shadowclub after the demise of their former band, Airship Orange, but the band first got serious in early 2009 when, after a brief breakup, Klawansky’s long time friend, Louis Roux, replaced the band’s original bassist.  The new Shadowclub line-up picked up a following in Jo’burg and Durban by playing clubs and handing out CDs of a set of demos they had recorded in a day. Soon after, they signed to South African indie label, Just Music, and got to work on a new batch of songs. Recorded in 2011 ‘Guns & Money’ contains both reworked songs from those early demos and new tracks, mostly written by Moolman.  “I write all of the lyrics and a lot of the music,” says Moolman. “I come up with the basic riffs, then we all turn them in to a song. As soon as a new song is written, we play it live. It’s important for us to take songs out of the rehearsal room. Only in front of an audience can we tell how well they work.”

Gotye “Somebody That I Used to Know” (Feat. Kimbra) (4FRNT Remix) [NEW MUSIC]

The big news is that Gotye’s highly anticipated Making Mirrors album released in the US today.  The album is packed with great songs, but also amazing sounds and musical intricacies that you will not find on other pop releases.  The single “Somebody That I Used to Know” has already jumped up The Billboard Hot 100 and continues to rise on the charts each week.  The creativity inside Making Mirrors is unmatched, and it’s no wonder that Gotye’s art inspires others to create as well.  That’s why it gives me great pleasure to present the 4FRNT remix of “Somebody That I Used to Know” (Feat. Kimbra).

How sick is that!  Don’t be fooled by imitators because the 4FRNT production team has already crafted the dirtiest drops for this track.   Composed of Lucian Piane, Ronald Lee Entwistle, and Jonathan Castelli, 4FRNT does their incredible mixing work in the sunshine of Los Angeles, CA.  I have a feeling that you’ll be hearing a lot more from these guys in the near future.  The remix is blowing up on youtube and Gotye’s album is being gobbled up by everyone who comes in contact with it.  It’s all for good reason because Gotye is his own singer, songwriter, and producer.  In my opinion, what this guy has done with Making Mirrors is truly art for your ears.  Influenced by sounds, different art forms, and life in Australia, Gotye has created something beautiful with this record, and you’d be surprised to get inside his brain on it’s creation.

You can listen to Making Mirrors in it’s entirety on Gotye’s Soundcloud channel.  Don’t forget to spread the love and share this article and remix with your friends!  For tour dates and more information on Gotye, check out gotye.com.

Jam Jarr – “Zombie Guts” [NEW MUSIC] [EVENT]

  • 01/31/12

  • · Cape Town · Events · Independent Music · Music · New Music

Jam JarrJam Jarr is one-half Bakaman and one-half Rubix Qube. Half hip-hop, half trance but in no way a combination of the two. Jam Jarr is fresh, nu-age South African glitch come hop come dub come kwaito, with a full head of bass.  Rubix Qube (aka Keiron Grieve aka Soundproof aka Phat Planet aka one part of Biorythm) makes the beats, with six years experience under his belt as an internationally-touring trance DJ/producer, and Bakaman (Paul Stubbs) provides the rhymes and vocals, having previously been a member of other glitched-out rap groups Chamber Concept and Spitshine.  Together the duo create awesome tracks, but are equally as impressive solo, or collaborating with other artists.  The duo explains the meaning behind their name as, “A name that spoke to the no-holds barred nature of our music, as well as the gob-smacking potency of it, and the mixture of our two different, yet similar musical backgrounds. Jam Jar was the result, and for some extrra flavor, and extrra R. And now we arre Jam Jarr.”

Their first EP – Fat Fruit – was released on African Dope Records in October 2010, and their second – I Am The Danger – is available in the Online African Dope Store now.  Since their beginning Jam Jarr has created great tracks, collected a loyal following and played at many of the best clubs in South Africa.  Their latest track “Zombie Guts” is sure to be a crowd pleaser at their show this Friday February 3rd at Die Mystic Boer in Stellenbosch.

Jam jarr - Die Mystic Boer

It’s easy to tell this duo produces great track for the simple love of music.  In a recent interview they were asked to explain why they chose music as a career, “There was no other choice. Music called and neither of us have hung up the phone yet. If you want a life of financial security and solid future prospects, don’t pick up the microphone, and take your fingers off the decks. The digital age has made it all the easier for independent artists and labels to get their music out, but it’s also meant that music is usually lost in the sea of all the other crap that’s flying around, let alone the gargantuan quantities of music itself. Still. Some things are just too good to pass by, so here we are, riding the wave of digital uncertainty, and over-abundance. Godspeed to us all.”

Yesterday’s Pupil – “Too Tired To Disco” [NEW ALBUM] [VIDEO] [FREE DOWNLOAD]

yesterdays pupil

Pierre-Henri van Pletzen, known affectionately as Peach created Yesterday’s Pupil originally as a side project while he was the drummer in SHU.  New listeners were immediately struck by the smooth, haunting vocals, the incredibly diverse production skills and the depth of the song-writing displayed by “SHU’s drummer/backing vocalist”.  Yesterday’s Pupil played his first live show in October 2007, and released his first full-length album, Errors of Enthusiasm, in October 2008. Rogan Kelsey of Lapdust Audio Mastering called it “the most eccentric album” he had ever mastered (an impressive claim when considering Rogan’s equally impressive list of clients). From that moment, Peach cascaded into a two-year mission of almost unbelievably diverse collaboration, performance and production in every corner and niche of the South African music scene, crowned with a scattering of international shows. Since 2007, Peach has worked on many  projects including performing at the Soccer World Cup Opening Ceremony with Tumi Molekane at Orlando Stadium in Soweto.

yesterdays pupil

Every part of Yesterday’s Pupil’s new album will be made available for free download. The plan is to release it in five parts – one every two months. The first part, Singularity,  contains two singles, of which “Too Tired to Disco” is the first.  Dual, the second part of his new album, has just been released and consists of two singles, namely “The Beast” featuring Tumi Molekane and “Harm”. While recently recorded, the songs were written before those of Singularity, and are noticeably less poppy. Part 3 is set for release in March.  In a recent interview Yesterday’s Pupil was asked why he decided to release the entire album for free through downloading – his response is an interesting take on the status of the music industry in general – “Music is free in one way or another. I decided I would prefer the fans to get the music directly from the source in a decent quality and format as opposed to some crappy youtube rip or something. It also connects you more with the fans. The position I was in I basically had to choose between some money or more fans and I chose the fans. This album is much much better in terms of song writing and production, I feel as though I have- or I am closer to finding my sound. The album will be released in five sequential parts with a two to three month interval in between. Each part will consist of two brand new original tracks accompanied by an artwork for each track as well as the lyrics and artist notes.”

I think the greatest thing about the format of Yesterday’s Pupil’s free download is the included extras in the Zip file.  It’s easy download  free music, but what I really miss is all the extra things that are included when you buy the album – like lyrics, artwork and writings from the musician about the music.  Well – it’s all here.  Here’s an excerpt from the artist notes under documents in the download from Part 1 – about “Too Tired to Disco.”

I wrote Too tired to disco in 4 hours, the whole thing done except for mixing of course. The mixing process got done in pieces over a course of fourteen months. I know this sounds absurd, but I was so busy with other jobs that I couldn’t always find time to work on my own material. When I did find the time, I used it for writing and recording new songs as opposed to mixing. But nonetheless here it is for all to enjoy for free.

I love the insight into what went into making the song – I highly recommend getting both Part 1 and 2 – and while it’s downloading check out the video for “Too Tired to Disco.”

Humming House Releases Debut Album – Nashville, TN [NEW MUSIC]

  • 01/31/12

Humming House is a new “Irish Porch Stomp” band from Nashville, TN that released their stunning debut album on January 17, 2012.  It has all seemed nothing short of a natural progression since the band formed and started to create music from a range of influences.  The experiment includes Americana, classical composition, bluegrass, soul, and traditional Irish music.  When combined using significant subjects and the right musicians, the product can be largely infective.  I make it sound like a simple recipe for success, but Humming House has deserved the attention they’ve received in recent months.   Let’s be real.  They recorded their debut self-titled album with Grammy-winning producers Vance Powell (The White Stripes, Chris Thile, Buddy Guy) and Mitch Dane (Jars of Clay).  With such success in the studio, the band has also been featured on NPR’s Live in Studio C and All Things Considered, Nashville’s Lightning 100 local spotlight, and STETSON’s Center Stage artist of the week.  All you have to do is listen!

That was the band’s video for their single, “Gypsy Django.”  ”The joyous, swing-infectious romp “Gypsy Django” was also the genesis of the band and the album. When co-producer Mitch Dane first heard them play, he cemented their decision to record together by putting them in the studio with his own resources to record that first track. The result was so unmistakably meant to be that plans for the album were undertaken immediately.”  The project turned into a collaboration and assortment of swing, rockabilly, and Irish music with the use of bluegrass style guitars and beautiful harmonies.  I think it’s amazing to see these new breeds of folk and bluegrass because it shows initiative and creativity in times where it’s so difficult to be original.  Check out this video of Humming House playing “Cold Chicago.”

These guys (and girl) are good, real good, and they’re fun too.  I think the combination of  their musicianship and energy as a group is what has propelled them faster than any similar bands.  Their debut album sure has plenty of energy to carry through a great season of touring, especially after recently signing to Paradigm booking agency in October 2011.  If you like what you’ve heard, check out more media and tour dates at humminghouse.com.  Click on the album art below to purchase a copy of their debut album!

Sharon Van Etten – Tramp [NEW MUSIC]

  • 01/31/12

  • · Music · New Music · New York · Uncategorized · Video

Sharon Van Etten is an American singer-songwriter based in Brooklyn, New York City.

Her songs were described by the music website Pitchfork Media as having “some echoes of folk tradition but generally in a more personal, introspective space.” NPR Music asserts: “Her songs are heartfelt without being overly earnest; her poetry is plainspoken but not overt, and her elegant voice is wrapped in enough rasp and sorrow to keep from sounding too pure or confident.”

Van Etten was born and raised in New Jersey. She moved to Tennessee to attend Middle Tennessee State University, where she discovered a variety of influential music. After moving back home to New Jersey, Van Etten was encouraged by Kyp Malone of TV on the Radio to pursue a career in music.

Her official debut, Because I Was In Love was released in spring 2009. In April 2009, Van Etten performed vocals and guitar for the song “Coming Home” written by Jeremy Joyce for the feature film “Woman’s Prison.”  In August 2009, she appeared in Hospice, the critically acclaimed album by indie rock group The Antlers and performed vocals on the track “Thirteen“. In January 2010, Van Etten was a featured artist on Weathervane Music‘s Shaking Through Web Series. On September 21, 2010 she released her second album Epic. She also contributed backing vocals to The National‘s song “Think You Can Wait” from the soundtrack to the film Win Win in 2011.

Her third studio album, Tramp, will be released in February 2012 on Jagjaguwar. Tramp was produced by The National’s Aaron Dessner, and recorded in his studio over the period of several months. After the release of the album, she will embark on a tour beginning in Philadelphia. The album will feature guest appearances from Aaron Dessner, Bryce Dessner, Matt Barrick, Zach Condon, and Jenn Wasner.
